Otani Workshop: Portraits

Portraits is a solo exhibition by the Japanese artist Otani Workshop, which showcases the loneliness that pervades everyone in his creative world. The subtle expressions inadvertently revealed in loneliness sum up everything: the smile brought by memories, the confusion about the future, and the confusion about the present are frozen in a fleeting time.

The artist embarked on a lonely journey, echoing Junzaburō Nishiwaki’s sentiment that "I feel in loneliness, so I exist" and searched for himself in wandering. Each work is infused with the vision and moment of loneliness, transforming the vague image in the mind into a tangible "existence" for others to observe, imagine, and perceive, transforming loneliness into tangible beauty, conveyance, and even communication.

Transferring the unique tactility experienced during ceramic making—carefully shaping clay with your fingers—to a two-dimensional medium. He chooses different substrates such as canvas, sacks, wooden boards, plates, etc., and uses the dots and layers of paint to render the touch, creating a unique texture effect in the painting. At the same time, he severed the direct connection between touch and ceramics, extending this physical experience to various media. As a result, what was originally a specific touch gradually evolves into an abstract sensibility that flows freely through the images he creates.
